Wine Magazine Review: Top 100 Cellar Selections 2013 No. 3 Guado - 2009

Giovanni Chiappini comes from a farming family who emigrated from the Marche to Bolgheri in 1954. Although Giovanni purchased his first land in 1978, he only began planting vineyards in 1995 adjacent to the now legendary estate of Tenuta delle Ornellaia. Giovanni Chiappini's first commercial wine was released in 2000. Guado dei Gemoli is named after an old farmhouse built in 1870 that used to sit on the property along the famous Fosso della Carestia Vecchia", the old road to Bolgheri; which was later changed to Cypress Road (the road measures 4,962 meters with 2,540 cypress trees lining it.).

The 50 acre farm is located in a gently rolling hillside region at about 350 feet, just 6 miles from the coastal Tyrrhenian seaside. Only about 15 acres are dedicated to grape growing, while another 15 acres compose established olive trees. Biodynamic-Eco farming is practiced to protect and respect the surrounding environment and traditions.

Wine Enthusiast 100 Point Wine
 **Cellar Selection**

This small, family-run estate in the heart of Bolgheri has delivered a wine so beautiful and elegant, it is catapulted to the level of landmark vintages of its celebrated neighbors, Sassicaia and Ornellaia. Inky concentration sets the stage for generous, but perfectly integrated, aromas of spice, chocolate and dark fruit. There's firm roundness in the mouth, followed by unforgettable persistence. Hold this wine 15 years or more.   (4/ 2013)

Appellation: Doc Bolgheri superior.

Guado de' Gemoli: wine obtained from Cabernet Sauvignon 80% and Merlot 20%. It's refined in small barrels of French oak for 12 months, and presents itself with a deep/rich color of ruby red with gently pomegranate reflections; the perfume is particularly elaborate with notes of ripe fruits, spices, vanilla, ink, tobacco and cocoa; regarding the gustative quality: it's a wine with an important tannic structure and a good aromatic persistence, with a long and clean final. This is a right wine for a long or medium aging and able to go well with important meat dishes, game and mature cheeses.
